AMHERST COLLEGE NEW SCIENCE CENTER Amherst, MA On Hold
This project involves the construction of a new 250,000 square foot Science Center at Amherst College. The four-level building is embedded as an outcrop into a steep hillside at the edge of the central quad, overlooking the Holyoke Range. The form of the building responds to the College’s desire to promote integration between the science departments and foster interdisciplinary collaboration. In turn, the landscape concept provides a strong connection between the upper and lower campus, drawing from the region’s diverse ecology of wet meadows and forests. The building’s floor plates provide approximately 70,000 square feet of green roofs, with each floor level connecting back into the hillside. Each terrace incorporates regional stone and indigenous plant communities. Site runoff is captured on the green roofs and directed through a hillside garden before entering the wet meadow basin. This project offers a new environmental ethic about rural sustainability on a historic New England campus. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
